After the death of her best friend and roommate Bessie (Rita Zohar) at a senior's living center in Florida, Eleanor (June Squibb) moves back to New York City to live with her daughter Lisa (Jessica Hecht) and grandson Max (Will Price).
Her daughter convinces Eleanor to attend music classes at the Manhattan Jewish Community Center, but instead Eleanor winds up in a support group for Holocaust survivors. Encouraged to tell her story, Eleanor decides to tell them Bessie's story, passing it off as her own.
Journalism student Nina (Erin Kellyman) is enthralled by the story and wants to feature Eleanor in an article. Fearing the repercussions, Eleanor declines, but Nina is persistant. As the two form a bond, Eleanor's resolve gets less strong and she agrees to an interview.
